James served two tours in Vietnam with the United States Army. He came home in 1971, married his high school sweetheart, and bought a small three-bedroom house outside Knoxville. He raised three children in that house. He buried his wife from that house in 2019. Last year, James suffered a stroke. He recovered — slowly — but the medical bills mounted. His Social Security and VA pension covered food and medication, but barely. When his property taxes came due, he couldn’t pay them. The county sent a notice: pay within 60 days or lose the home. James is 76 years old. He has lived in that house for 40 years. He has nowhere else to go. A volunteer at his local VFW post called us. Within a week, Home for Every Hero paid the county $3,400 — covering the back taxes and protecting his home from sale. James cried on the phone when we told him.”This house is the only thing I have left of her,” he said, talking about his wife. “Thank you for letting me keep her with me.”No veteran who served this country should ever lose their home. Not after one year. Not after forty.
