A Single Mom, A Soldier, A Family Saved

Sarah W.

Sarah enlisted in the U.S. Army at nineteen. She served eight years as a combat medic, including a deployment to Iraq where she earned an Army Commendation Medal for saving the life of a fellow soldier under fire. When she came home, she came home alone. Her marriage didn’t survive her deployment. She raised her two children on her own while finishing nursing school on the GI Bill. This past February, her car broke down the same week her hours were cut at the hospital. She fell behind on her electric bill. On the coldest night of the year, the power was shut off in her small rental home. Her children — ages 6 and 9 — slept in her bed under every blanket they owned. A neighbor told her about Home for Every Hero. We paid her utility company directly the next morning. The lights came back on by dinnertime. “I served my country,” Sarah said quietly. “I never thought I’d have to ask anyone to keep my kids warm. “She doesn’t have to ask anymore. Sarah finished her nursing program last spring. She now works full-time in the ICU at a local VA hospital — caring for the same kind of veterans who once cared for her.
